Portico

A mix of traditional and modern.

A black and white scheme was chosen for the updated facade, which allowed us to use a modernized version of the Japanese method referred to as Yakisugi (more commonly known as Shou Sugi Ban) - burning the wood to preserve it.

The process:

We used red oak, a combination of modern and traditional hand tools, burned each piece after fabrication, and pre-assembled the structure before installing onsite. The entire structure was coated with boiled linseed oil to preserve the charring.
